PowerSmart Generator Buying Guide

The PowerSmart Generator Lineup

PowerSmart builds portable generators for buyers who need real backup power without paying premium pricing. The lineup runs from compact 1200W camping units up to 12000W high-output models, with inverter, open-frame, and dual-fuel options across the range. CO Alert safety shutoff is built into most models, and the brand focuses on practical features over marketing hype.

Inverter vs. Open-Frame PowerSmart Models

PowerSmart inverter generators produce clean, stable sine wave power. This makes them safe for laptops, phones, CPAP machines, televisions, and other sensitive electronics. Inverter models also throttle the engine to match the load, which cuts fuel use and noise at partial loads. Open-frame PowerSmart models run at a fixed RPM and deliver more raw wattage per dollar, making them better suited to job sites and whole-home outage coverage where total capacity matters more than noise level.

Dual-Fuel Flexibility

Several PowerSmart models run on either gasoline or propane. Propane stores indefinitely without going stale, which makes it the better choice for long-term emergency reserves. Gasoline is easier to find on short notice during an active outage. Dual-fuel units let you keep both options open and switch between them based on what is available.

Choosing by Wattage

For RV and camping use, the 1200W to 2500W PowerSmart inverter models cover lights, phone charging, small appliances, and a coffee maker. For home outage backup, 3600W to 5000W models will run a refrigerator, lights, fans, a microwave, and a few small appliances at the same time. For whole-home coverage or job sites with power tools, look at the 9625W to 12000W open-frame models. Always size based on running watts plus the highest startup surge in your load.

CO Alert Safety

Most PowerSmart models include a built-in carbon monoxide sensor that automatically shuts down the engine if dangerous CO levels are detected nearby. This is a critical safety feature, but it is not a replacement for proper placement. Always run a generator outdoors, at least 20 feet from windows, doors, and vents, and never inside a garage or enclosed space.

PowerSmart focuses on practical, reliable portable power at a competitive price. Most models include CO Alert safety, inverter or dual-fuel technology, and full factory warranty coverage. As an authorized PowerSmart dealer, Mighty Generators supports all warranty claims directly with the factory.

Inverter models produce clean sine wave power that is safe for sensitive electronics like laptops, phones, CPAP machines, and TVs. They also throttle the engine to match the load, which reduces fuel use and noise. Open-frame models run at a fixed RPM and deliver more raw wattage per dollar, which makes them better suited for power tools, pumps, and high-load applications.

Dual-fuel PowerSmart units run on either gasoline or propane (LPG). Propane stores indefinitely without going stale, which makes it ideal for emergency reserves. Gasoline is easier to source on short notice during an active outage. You can switch fuel sources without disassembling anything, giving you flexibility based on what is available.

Always run a generator outdoors, at least 20 feet from windows, doors, and vents. Never run a generator inside a garage, basement, shed, or any enclosed space, even with the door open. The CO Alert sensor is a backup safety feature, not a replacement for proper placement. Carbon monoxide poisoning from generators kills hundreds of people every year and is fully preventable.
