Liquid-cooled designs handle sustained high-load operation more effectively and are required for continuous-duty and prime-power applications. Single-Phase vs. 3-Phase Power
Residential buildings in North America use single-phase power (120/240V). Cummins RS Series home standby units deliver single-phase output and connect directly to a residential panel through an automatic transfer switch. Commercial buildings often use 3-phase power (120/208V or 120/240V) to distribute load across motors, HVAC compressors, and large equipment. Automatic Transfer Switch
An automatic transfer switch (ATS) is required for standby generator installation. The ATS monitors utility power and switches the load to the generator within seconds of an outage. When utility power returns, the ATS transfers the load back and shuts down the generator. Home standby RS Series units (RS13A through RS20A) require a transfer switch, sold separately or bundled depending on the model. Commercial units require a transfer switch sized to the facility load. Installation Requirements
All Cummins RS Series standby generators require professional installation by a licensed electrician and, for natural gas units, a licensed gas contractor. Installation involves a concrete or composite pad, a dedicated fuel line connection, and a permitted ATS installation in the electrical panel. Cummins ships the generator with a weatherproof enclosure. The RS13A, RS17A, and RS20A are designed for residential siting with low noise output for neighborhood installation. Larger commercial units require clearance from structures and air intake obstructions per local codes. Freight delivery is included and ships direct from the manufacturer.
