A conventional generator produces AC power directly from the engine, which means output quality fluctuates with engine speed. An inverter generator converts that AC power to DC, then back to clean AC through a microprocessor, producing stable sine wave electricity with less than 3% total harmonic distortion. That clean output is safe for laptops, phones, CPAP machines, and any sensitive electronics. Inverter generators also run quieter and more fuel-efficiently than conventional models because the engine speed adjusts to match the load.
Match wattage to your intended use. For camping and tailgating with phones, a light, and small appliances, 2,000-2,500W is enough. For RV use including a rooftop AC unit, you need at least 3,500-4,500W. For home backup covering essential circuits like a refrigerator, sump pump, lights, and outlets, plan for 7,000-9,000W. For whole-home backup including a central AC or well pump, look at 10,000W and above. Check the starting wattage of your largest appliance - motors draw 2-3x their running wattage on startup.
Dual-fuel generators run on either gasoline or propane. Tri-fuel generators add natural gas as a third option. Fuel flexibility matters most during extended outages when gas stations are closed or out of stock. Propane stores indefinitely and can be piped directly from a tank. Natural gas connects to your home line and never runs out. If you are buying for emergency preparedness, dual or tri-fuel capability is worth the investment.
